Growing Knowledge from the Ground Up: A Look Back and Ahead in the formatio Garden

Another vibrant season has come to a close in the Formatio garden, leaving our school community nourished in more ways than one.

A Bountiful Harvest (2025/2026)

During the 2025/2026 school year, our SEK 3 students poured remarkable dedication into cultivating our shared green space. Their journey began in autumn, carefully preparing the soil for winter rest and early spring planting. Come spring, they sowed a diverse array of crops tailored for summer and autumn harvesting.

Their hard work yielded a colorful feast for our school: crisp kohlrabi, vibrant red beets, tender beans, fresh salad greens, cabbage, crunchy radishes, sun-ripened tomatoes, hearty pumpkins, aromatic basil, and spring onions.

Embracing Nature’s Lessons

Gardening is as much about resilience as it is about celebration. The intense summer heat posed a tough challenge for our corn and potato crops, which didn’t flourish as well as hoped. However, these natural setbacks provided our students with valuable real-world lessons in climate adaptability, soil care, and agricultural resilience.

Passing the Trowel to SEK 1 (2026/2027)

As we step into the 2026/2027 school year, our SEK 1 students have officially taken the helm. They are stepping into their new responsibilities with enthusiasm, learning firsthand what it takes to cultivate food from seed to table.

It hasn’t taken long for them to dive right into the ecosystem. From spotting beneficial ladybugs to managing garden pests like beetles and slugs, SEK 1 is discovering that our garden is a rich, chemical-free environment. They are learning that sustainable, biodiverse gardening doesn’t rely on synthetic shortcuts—it requires curiosity, patience, and plenty of personal care for the ecosystem to truly thrive.
